The series, set in a group of fictional public housing in Manchester, revolves around the life of alcohol addict Frank Gallagher (David Threlfall) and his large and troubled family. Initially, the series focuses on the stories of Frank and his six children, Fiona (Anne-Marie Duff) and boyfriend Steve (James McAvoy), Lip (Jody Latham), Ian (Gerard Kearns), Carl (Elliott Tittensor), Debbie (Rebecca Ryan), and Liam (Johnny Bennett), and their neighbors, Kev (Dean Lennox Kelly) and Veronica Ball (Maxine Peake), but, starting with the fourth season, many of the main characters leave the series, so much so that currently the only ones present from the first season are the protagonist, Frank Gallagher, and the daughter of his second wife, Karen Jackson (Rebecca Atkinson). Starting from 2009, the Maguire family, already present in previous seasons but in a secondary role, becomes more and more protagonist of the show. Over the years, other minor characters have also gained importance, such as the Karib family.
