Star Trek cover: all TV series and movies and the order in which to watch them

In September 1966, over half a century ago, Star Trek - what we know today as the classic series - debuted on the small screen, changing the history of TV, film, science fiction and popular culture.

An enviable achievement, considering that more than 55 years after its birth, Star Trek still represents one of the most loved and followed sci-fi franchises ever, as well as one of the most prolific.

This article, dedicated to the presentation of all the TV series and films of the Star Trek universe and their order of viewing, is constantly updated.

Born from the imagination of the great Gene Roddenberry, the trek universe debuted in 1966 with the classic series, and then expanded and expanded over the decades with other TV series and a long line of films.

Star Trek has written the history of the small screen but also of the science, giving new inputs to research and inspiring scientists all over the world for new inventions, starting with the cell phone that the classic series had shown us in the “crude” version of the communicator.

Having entered that part of popular culture that knows no barriers of time or language, Star Trek has given birth to an active and faithful fandom of the years, which has made the ideals of the series the aspiration for a better world, based on a collaboration between all human beings for space exploration (in search of strange, new worlds ...), the absence of wars (money has been eliminated, returning to barter), disease or famine (replicators provide everything necessary and medical science has made great progress).

La depth of content narratives, discovered little by little - episode after episode, series after series, film after film - meant that Star Trek marked fundamental milestones in our history as well.

On November 22, 1968 he showed the first inter-racial kiss of the history of TV, exchanged between Captain Kirk and Lieutenant Uhura (and "justified" with alien constraint, to avoid incurring the censorship that had already announced that he wanted to cancel that scene).

Arrived in Italy very late, the May 1, 1979, on the network then known as Telemontecarlo, the classic series today makes people smile for its special effects and times extended to exasperation, but at the time it also laid the foundations for the change in the rhythms of editing and narration, revolutionizing the language of television .

To Gene Roddenberry, to his dream about a future in which the only enemy comes from space and humanity has overcome every conflict and diversity, we owe the birth of a potentially infinite story, as demonstrated by the many declinations, but also full of charm. and teachings.

From the Prime Directive, which prevents interfering with the development of other cultures, to respect for the Starfleet hierarchy and the creation of the United Federation of Planets, Star Trek has opened the door to the dream of a future full of opportunities for all, regardless of their origin.

Declining this future, after the classic series, in ben 7 spin-offs (plus an eighth already announced) and, so far, 13 film.

All to see and review, especially if - like me - you have several favorite episodes among the various series, capable of evoking a special atmosphere and making us relive emotions related to our history as fans.

Star Trek: The Classic Series (1966)

  • 3 seasons - over

Space, the final frontier. Here are the voyages of the spaceship Enterprise during its five-year mission, aimed at exploring new worlds, in search of other forms of life and civilizations. Until you get there, where no man has gone before.

With these words, the beginning of an endless story was written. The presentation of Star Trek, of those three seasons that we know today as "the classic series", as I have already told you, it would change not only the history of TV, but also that of cinema, popular culture, science fiction and science.

Gene Roddenberry's imagination would have inspired not only all fans of the series around the world, but also the scientists and inventors who shared the dream.

A 55+ year long dream, which began with the voyages of the starship USS Enterprise to tell us through 3 seasons the incredible adventures of the captain James T Kirk (William Shatner), flanked by Scientific Officer Spock (Leonard Nimoy), by Doctor Leonard Horatio McCoy (DeForest Kelley), by Lieutenant Commander Montgomery Scott (James Doohan), by Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu (George Takei), by Ensign Pavel Chekov ( Walter Koenig) and Lieutenant Uhura (Nichelle Nichols).

Alien races, unknown planets, rescue missions: for Captain Kirk's crew there was every kind of encounter, enemy, challenge. Plus, of course, the foundations of the most beloved science franchise in TV history.

And a pilot episode - The Cage - which the top of the network didn't like, prompting the production to make a second one - the one we all know - and later to recycle some of the material shot for The Cage over the next few episodes.

The Cage (The zoo of Talos in Italian) is famous because Captain Kirk was not driving the Enterprise, but Christopher Pike, a character that we would learn about later and who was then played by Jeffrey Hunter.

Nominated for 13 Emmy Awards, the classic Star Trek series never won one: science fiction, still considered a minor (and "culturally" inferior) genre would only be re-evaluated later and, paradoxically, thanks to Star Trek and the its cultural contribution.

Star Trek: The Animated Series (1973)

  • 2 seasons - over

La animated series of Star Trek, produced for two seasons between 1973 and 1974, tells the adventures of the crew of the classic series for 22 episodes, with the dubbing of the original interpreters. This series ranks after the classic series and just before the first Star Trek movie. Thanks to the possibilities offered by animation, many alien races have been included in the series, which would have been too expensive if it had been produced in live-action.

Commander Data (Brent Spiner), Klingon Wolf (Michael Dorn), Lt. Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) and Councilor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis).

Without forgetting, of course, the ship's doctor, Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), her son Ensign Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) and the legendary Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg), alien in charge of the forward bar on the Enterprise.

The Next Generation delves into the series mythology introducing new foods, and in particular the most formidable enemies encountered by man up to that moment: the Borg

Starfleet is grappling with an alien species, organic and mechanical hybrid, consisting of a sort of hive in which all assimilated - and mechanically enhanced - individuals are headed by a single collective consciousness, at the helm of which there is a Queen.

The very concept of Borg society, devoid of feelings and with the sole objective of assimilating as many cultures and populations as possible in order to enrich themselves and become stronger and stronger, is destined to revolutionize the trek universe and to transform Jean-Luc Picard into the very symbol of humanity opposed to the concept of hyper-technology, one of the recurring nightmares of classic science fiction since its inception.

Star Trek: TNG is also famous for fueling the genre time travel, another element that would become an integral part of the trek narrative spirit, and thanks to the revolution of the Bridge Holograms - a recreational space aboard the Enterprise where the crew can recreate any environment - Picard and his team give us unmissable forays into the Earth's past and adventures destined to become cult.

I Klingon, the old enemies of Kirk and the era of the classic series, are for the first time on the bridge of the Enterprise thanks to Lieutenant Worf, who allows us to deepen the culture of one of the most beloved peoples of the saga (with a language of its own that hardcore fans speak fluently).

Lieutenant Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby), who is responsible for the security of the Enterprise, soon leaves the scene and leaves his role to Worf, changing the fate of the series.

Star Trek: The Next Generation was produced for 7 seasonsi, which earned her 18 Emmy Awards and many other awards.

Strategically placed for the Dominion War (which we are told in the last two seasons) the DS9 station represents an important crossroads of trade and hosts aliens of all kinds, who meet under the control of the Starfleet together with the Bajoran Militia.

Unlike previous series, Deep Space Nine focuses on intrigue and political plots, on the manipulation of diplomacy, on political killings and on the exploitation of every resource to obtain an advantage, all elements that in the previous series seemed to have been overcome, at least among members of the same species.

But thanks to the cultural complexity of the series, set in a place where the balance of the entire known universe must be kept smoothly to avoid catastrophes, all the worst of every people emerges to remind us that, centuries in the future, ambition and conquest remain central themes in the soul of every form of life.

The series was born after the death of Gene Roddenberry, which occurred two years before the television debut of DS9, and will remain the only one in the entire franchise and not be set on a spaceship.

  • 4 seasons - over

First television prequel to the classic series, Star Trek: Enterprise tells us for 4 seasons the adventures of the crew aboard the Enterprise NX-01, the first ship built with the purpose of exploring space thanks to the warp engine.

In command is the captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula), along with the faithful dog Beagle Porthos, the first dog aboard an Enterprise.

Archer's crew is made up of the Vulcan First Officer, T'Pol (Jolene Blalock), whose presence was commissioned by the High Command of Vulcan to keep an eye on the moves of Archer and the other humans on board, in view of an alliance destined to become definitive with the creation of the Astral Fleet. Spok is therefore no longer the first Vulcan on the deck of an Enterprise: he has an illustrious predecessor. Unlike Spock, however, T'Pol is not half human: his coexistence with the rest of the crew is, therefore, very difficult at the beginning, but as expected everything will end in the right way.

There is also another record, in chronological terms, conquered by Enterprise: although it is known to all the fan trek that the Deposit they are first fought by Captain Picard, in Enterprise there is an encounter with them (in one of the best episodes of the entire 4-season series), although Archer and his crew do not know their name or peculiarities.

Star Trek: Discovery (2017)

The prequel to the classic series: Discovery ranks approx 10 years earlier of the adventures of Captain Kirk, but after those of Archer.

For the first time in trek history, as the protagonist there is not a captain, but a First Officer: Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Greene, ex Sasha from The Walking Dead).

In fact, the whole story revolves around the actions, decisions and personal and professional history of Michael, the first human being educated to Vulcan Knowledge Center and the Vulcan Academy of Sciences.

The half-sister of Star Trek's most famous science officer: orphaned, Michael comes adopted by Spock's family on Vulcan, becoming his de facto sister.

Michael is a confident, intelligent and willing woman, very loyal to the captain Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh), but only until the moment when, forced by circumstances, she struggles to take the lead in her place.

Imprisoned, tried and tainted with the terrible crime of insubordination, Michael Burnham will have to do her best to prove she is trustworthy in the new mission, alongside Captain Lorca (Jason Isaacs), but once again things are not what they seem.

Burnham is the first trek character to rebel against his captain, infringes the Prime Directive and ends up waging a war against the Klingons (led by T'Kuvma but also engaged in an internal war), but nevertheless manages to rehabilitate himself both in the eyes of the spectator, who knows his reasons, and in those of his colleagues.

Star Trek (1979)

Ben 3 Oscar nomination (Art Direction, special effects, original soundtrack) for the first feature film based on the TV series, 12 years after the television debut of Kirk and his companions.

Directed by the great Robert Wise (West Side Story, All Together Passionately) and starring the original cast of the classic series tells us how Admiral Kirk (the rank of captain has long since passed) returns aboard the Enterprise, with his crew, to intercept an alien vessel that threatens the Earth.

The narrative is slow, accurate, built like (and beyond) the sometimes maddeningly slow pace of the first episodes of the TV series.

So much so that William Shatner, seeing the film for the first time in the full version, was convinced that it would represent the death of the Star Trek franchise, because the public would no longer tolerate the slowness of the film almost 15 years after the debut of the TV series, with the rhythm changes in the narrative.

He was wrong about the fate of Star Trek, although he certainly cannot be blamed on the slowness of the film which, seen today, is really maddening in some parts. Also counting the fact that the duration, for the time, was exaggerated: over two and a quarter hours, to be precise 132 minutes for the originally distributed version, 136 for the director's cut and 143 for the television version.

The story, on the other hand, comes from an idea of Alan Dean Foster, his first idea for a feature film.

The original movie trailers had the narrative voice of Orson Welles in person, the soundtrack was a great success (Gene Roddenberry shot it, in the main theme, also for The Next Generation) and the film - costing around 35 million dollars - he collected it over 82 and a half in the United States alone, becoming a blockbuster.

A success that would have given way to a film saga, parallel to the television one, able to consecrate Star Trek to the Olympus of science fiction already at the end of the 70s, when the world was going crazy for the first chapter (sorry, the fourth ... ) of Star Wars.

Star Trek III was a good commercial success (a budget of 17 million dollars, almost totally paid off by the receipts of the first weekend in the cinema) but above all the success of having convinced Nimoy to re-wear the role of Spock with the promise of making him direct.

The actor gets along very well behind the camera, so much so that he immediately snatches a contract to direct the next film in the saga.

Route to Earth (1986)

We are at the fourth film of the saga and, for the first time "Star Trek" does not appear in the Italian title of the film. The film was released in Italy in July 1987 and, without the internet and all the other modern word of mouth tools, it was not easy for the general public to immediately identify it as a new trek adventure, as the original title Star Trek IV: The Voyage provided. Home.

The film was a great success and conquered 4 nomination at the Oscars (for photography, sound, sound effects and original soundtrack) directed by Leonard Nimoy, now completely at ease behind the camera, and the script by harve Bennett, Nicholas Meyer, Steve Meerson and Peter Krikes from an idea by Nimoy himself.

The protagonist is always the original cast of the classic series, in the latest film produced the first the arrival of The Next Generation on TV the following year.

The plot revolves around a journey through time: Admiral Kirk and his crew return to Earth in 1986 with a very special mission: to transport some whales, a species now extinct in the future, in the XNUMXrd century to allow a probe alien to make contact with them, neutralizing an energy source so dangerous as to destroy the entire planet.

For the first time in the film franchise, the plot diverges from the future, immersing the protagonists in the present of a San Francisco in full 80s fashion, with an unknown and very remote past for the protagonists.

The themes are also new: for the first time the animal rights and environmentalist theme is introduced. Which is not to be taken for granted, given that we are talking about a production made in the mid-80s.

The public appreciates this bizarre adventure through time: The Road to Earth coastline about 25 million dollars and grosses 133 at the box office all over the world, decreeing another great success for the saga.

In the cast, alongside the protagonists, there is also Catherine Hicks (Seventh Heaven), who had never seen Star Trek and knew nothing about it. Which she, she would later declare, had made it easier for her to approach the future world of Kirk and his companions in a much more natural way.

As you already know, Shatner was busy with other television projects and was reluctant to put on Kirk's shoes again. So much so that Nimoy and Bennett first thought of a prequel story, set with a young Kirk at Starfleet Academy. Yes, the project that would be revived many years later with the prequel starring Chris Pine.

To persuade the actor, Paramount Pictures significantly raised his cachet and, along with spending on Nimoy's salary as a director and performer, he found himself having to cut the budget of his next television project: The Next Generation.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989)

This time, for the fifth film of the saga, behind the camera we find another historical interpreter of Stark Trek: none other than William Shatner, known to all as James Tiberius Kirk.

His directorial debut, however, took place with one of the least loved films by the public up to that moment.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, born from a subject of Shatner himself, revolves around the kidnapping of some representatives of the Federation, the Klingon and Romulan empires, by Spock's evil half-brother, Sybok (Laurence Luckinbill, Cocktail ).

Kirk leads the Enterprise on a rescue mission, to free the hostages, but the ship is captured and Sybok forces the crew to sail to the center of the universe, where according to an ancient Vulcan myth lies the lost paradise of the God. by Sha Ka Ree.

Titled in the original Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, the film was written by David Loughery, with a short and not remarkable career, and was the first film not to be released in theaters in various countries around the world, including Italy.

In the face of a budget of nearly $ 28 million, the film grossed just $ 52 million at the US box office, so the production decided to distribute it directly for the home video market.

One of the reasons for the first flop of the saga was the historian strike of the scriptwriters - and this explains a "nobody" to write the script - which also led to drastic cuts for some departments, starting with the visual effects, due to the stop immediately from filming.

The result was the choice of an ending which, in the original intentions, should have been completely different but which was forced by time, cost and lack of technical means, in a disappointing result.

Despite being on the air, and with great success, Star Trek: The Next Generation on TV, the cast of the film remained that of the classic series, another element that probably contributed to not attracting the new generations of passionate spectators of the trek universe.

The Undiscovered Country (1991)

Once again, as for the previous film, despite the fact that The Next Generation has already been a cult series for some time, the film saga continues on its way: one focused on Kirk and the characters of the classic series.

We arrived at the sixth film, again without "Star Trek" in the Italian title (to do the same with Rotta verso la Terra) and the fate of the saga to be revived after the fiasco of The Last Frontier.

To do this, Paramount calls upon the great to direct Nicholas meyer, to whom he also entrusts the script together with debutante Denny Martin Flinn, on a story created by Leonard Nimoy together with Lawrence Konner (Planet of the Apes, Roots) and Mark Rosenthal (The Jewel of the Nile, Superman IV).

The plot revolves around a fact of blood: Kirk and McCoy are unjustly accused and imprisoned for the murder of the Chancellor of the Klingons.

It will be up to the rest of the Enterprise crew to find a way to free them and prove their innocence. Kirk and McCoy are victims of a plot aimed at sabotaging peace in space and the tension is very high: the public appreciates and repays with positive reviews and excellent takings.

Il budget available returns to be very high, equal to 30 million dollars. The producers want to redeem the previous failure and they succeed, achieving nearly 97 million box office receipts around the world

Next to the cast of historical interpreters we also find Kim Cattrall, the future Samantha of Sex & The City, the great Canadian actor Christopher Plummer (Oscar for Beginners) and Michael Dorne, the interpreter of Worf, in a cameo as a Klingon.

Route to the Unknown - Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country in original language - gets an Oscar nomination for sound effects and makeup and among the performers he also introduces us to Brock Peters, the future Joseph Sisko of Deep Space Nine.

Generations (1994)

For the first time since 1979, the year of Star Trek's debut on the big screen, alongside the undisputed protagonist James Kirk is also presented to the audience in the hall Captain Picard along with the rest of the cast of The Next Generation.

As the title suggests, Star Trek makes room for newcomers and only Kirk remains of the classic series, who joins TNG in an adventure destined to become an integral part of the trek myth.

Generations (Star Trek: Generations) does things in style: a stellar budget from 35 million dollars (amply repaid, with 120 million box office receipts worldwide), the first film in the saga to have a customized website, aimed at promoting theatrical release, and an official handover between the actor-icon of the classic adventures (in every sense) of Star Trek and the idol of new fans and unforgettable moments, imprinted in the heart and memory of every trekker.

David Carson, former director of Deep Space Nine, which in the meantime had already debuted on TV and had reached its second season, was hired to direct the film.

The screenplay is by Ronald D. Moore and Brannon Braga, destined to remain linked to Star Trek on many other occasions, starting with a story by Rick Berman, former writer of TNG and executive producer of the following series.

Generations Generations Four generations have passed since the catastrophe of Captain Kirk's spaceship and the new crew receives a distress call: Dr. Soran is saved and then tries to reach Nexus, ... Open tab

The plot tells the attempt of the alien scientist Soran (the unforgettable Malcolm McDowell) to return to the Nexus, a source of energy that represents a sort of paradise for those who enter it, allowing them to relive the good moments of their life and never do the experience of death.

Willing to do anything to achieve his goal, Soran will lead to the destruction of the Enterprise but also to the historic meeting between Picard and Kirk, Patrick Stewart and William Shatner, which takes place right inside the Nexus.

Through the usual, complex spacetime spins, two generations of Enterprise captains - those of the first two TV series of the franchise - give life to an epochal meeting on the big screen, with the official passing of the baton symbolized by the death of Kirk, buried. by Picard.

We are facing the end of an era: from now on, in the films there will no longer be the crew of the classic series (which in Generations mixes with that of The Next Generation, sending fans in raptures).

First Contact (1996)

We are facing one of the most loved films - certainly by me - in the Star Trek film saga.

Titled in its original language Star Trek: First Contact, it is the first film directed by Jonathan Frakes (who directs and plays, in the role of Riker - Number 1) and brings the couple Moore - Braga back to the screenplay, once again for a story conceived by Rick Berman.

The plot tells us about the journey of the Deposit, the terrible enemies of The Next Generation, through time to prevent the first contact between the terrestrials and the aliens (Vulcanians, to be precise, as the trek story teaches).

The hero of humanity Zefram Cochrane, the man who would change the fate of the world and initiate the so-called "warp civilization" and space travel, is not the upright man that the history books report.

Picard and his friends discover this by going back in time to fight the Borg and save the moment of first contact, which is crucial to the future of humanity.

The film tells us one of the most defining moments in the history of the trek universe, it puts us face to face with the Borg and tells us in depth their social structure, revealing information that makes us know them as it had never been done before in all of the film and television franchise.

First contact First contact Despite the order not to intervene in the clash between the star fleet and the "Borg", the Enterprise turns towards the Earth and manages to destroy the alien ship. There isn't even ... Open tab

The Cochrane Story, interpreted for the occasion by James cromwell (The Green Mile, LA Confidential) and the birth of the warp engine joins the moment in which Jean-Luc Picard faces the Borg Queen (Alice Krige) and tells us unpublished things both of the past (future for us) of humanity, both of the most terrifying and fascinating aliens ever known in the trek universe.

The character of Lily (Alfre Woodard) represents our point of view: a terrestrial who runs into people and technologies of a future that she could never have imagined ... in particular.

First contact gets one Oscar nomination for the best makeup, and boasts the higher budget never used up to this moment in the saga (about 45 million dollars).

The bet is a winner from all points of view, and the proceeds pay off more than three times the initial investment, with box office earnings of $ 150 million around the world.

Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)

Second direction for Jonathan frakes, always in the double role of actor and director, given that the cast of The Next Generation is now the protagonist in the cinema.

The screenplay for Star Trek: Insurrection - which since the previous First Contact has stopped reporting the progressive numbers in the titles of the films - is signed by Michael Piller, former authors of several episodes of The Next Generation and co-creator of Voyager. The idea for the film stems from a story by Piller himself together with Rick Berman.

We have reached the ninth chapter of the film saga. The plot kicks off when Data, on an observation mission on the planet Ba'Ku, begins to exhibit strange behaviors. We will discover that Ba'Ku hides the holy grail of the human race, or the fountain of eternal youth, obtained thanks to the emission of radiations that induce the regeneration of the DNA of its inhabitants.

Which, of course, pushes the Federation to make a pact with the Son'a aliens, able to extract the precious radiation from the planet to make it available elsewhere as well. Unfortunately, the trial would effectively cause Ba'Ku's death, so Picard and his crew decide to rebel against Federation orders to save the planet and prevent his people from being transported elsewhere.

Along with Star Trek: Beyond, due out in 2016, this is the only film in the entire saga that doesn't feature scenes set on or near Earth.

We are grappling with a burning moral issue, with the Prime Directive and with that insubordination - a very serious crime in Starfleet - that would have been the center of Michal Burnham's story in Discovery.

From many points of view, therefore, The Insurrection anticipates some future narrative elements and insights destined to characterize the modern narrative of Star Trek.

Released in Italian cinemas the11 June of the 1999, Insurrection breaks previous film's budget record with a cost which is close to 60 million dollars (58 and odd, to be precise) and collects double that worldwide.

Among the deleted scenes we also find a sequence that involved Quark, the character of Admin Shimerman in Deep Space Nine.

Do not miss the interpretation of F. Murray Abraham (Oscar winner for Amadeus) in the role of the evil Ru'afo.

Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)

After a 4-year film hiatus, while Voyager ended on TV and Enterprise debuted, Star Trek crosses the finish line of the tenth feature film.

As happened with the first films and the cast of the classic series, the cinema ignores the new series and continues to tell us stories starring Jean-Luc Picard and his crew.

The director of the film, entitled Star Trek: Nemesis in the original, boasts the direction of Stuart Baird (known for his editing career with blockbuster films such as Superman, Lethal Weapon and Gorilla in the Mist) and the screenplay by John Logan (writer of many films, from Gladiator to Skyfall, and future creator and writer of Penny Dreadful) .

The Enterprise is sent on a mission to Romulus to investigate the killing of the slaughtered Romulan Senators following a conspiracy. Picard and his discover that the perpetrator of the plot is the cruel Shinzon (a then young and almost unknown Tom Hardy) who, after taking power, intends to use his new secret weapon to exterminate the entire population of Earth.

Il record budgets of 60 million dollars is not paid off at the box office, quite the contrary. In fact, the film conquers a negative record in terms of box office: adding all the proceeds at the box office around the world, La nemesi reaches a total of just 67 million dollars, qualifying itself as the film of the saga that has grossed less than all. Less than the still hated The Last Frontier, which is considered the first cinematic flop but is not comparable to the failure of this one.

What happened? The answer is quite simple: the blame is to be attributed to an unoriginal plot, which really knows too much about it already and which is particularly disappointing for longtime fans.

The only one to emerge victorious from this economic disaster is Patrick Stewart: his pay for the film comes very close to the amount the actor had earned playing Picard for all 7 seasons of The Next Generation.

Even Tom Hardy, who we know today from titles like Peaky Blinders and Mad Max, is doing well, enough to win a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor.

The subject of the film was born from an idea of John Logan together with Rick Berman and Brent spiner, the interpreter of Data. In Italy it was released on May 16, 2003.

Star Trek (2009)

New chapter, new cast, new setting: in 2009 comes the prequel of the classic series that had been in the minds of the authors and actors of the franchise for years.

We meet a young James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), in an unprecedented version: between youthful excesses and encounters that will mark his destiny.

We are in 2233 when a Federation ship is attacked by a Romulan vessel that emerged from a black hole. The Romulan captain, Nero (Eric Bana) asks the Grounders to account for a mysterious spaceship and an ambassador named Spock.

But the ground crew knows nothing, so Nero kills the captain and exterminates his crew as well. First Officer George Kirk, aboard with his wife about to give birth, heroically sacrifices himself to give everyone time to abandon ship and then launch it at the Narada.

His son, James T. Kirk, who survived thanks to George's sacrifice, years later enters the Fleet Academy on the advice of Captain Pike, who knew his heroic father and who will find him on board (without his knowledge) during the voyage. inaugural of the Enterprise.

The young Kirk, rival of an equally young Spock (Zachary Quinto) befriends Doctor McCoy (Karl Urban) and will soon make himself known as a worthy heir of his father.

A huge commercial success for the film directed by J.J. Abrams, the creator of Lost who marks his entry into the trek world with a bang.

Star Trek is written by Alex Kurtzman alongside Roberto Orci and awarded with an Oscar for the best makeup (against a total of 4 nominations).

The new generations appreciate the great irony and the narrative rhythm, as well as the exasperation of the character traits of the characters of the classic series, so much so as to repay the film with receipts of almost 386 million dollars worldwide, paying homage to the sumptuous budget from 150.

Uhura is played by Zoe Saldana, Sulu by John Cho, Scotty by Simon Pegg while the late Anton Yelchin plays a young Chekov.

In Italy the film was also distributed with the title: Star Trek - The future begins.

Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013)

Four years after the huge success of Star Trek, J.J. Abrams returns to directing with the sequel Into Darkness, also written by Kurtzman and Orci together with another old acquaintance of Abrams: Damon Lindelof.

Two hours and twelve minutes of adrenaline, one Oscar nomination for visual effects and a new big success at the box office (almost half a billion dollars compared to 190 million budget).

In this new chapter, which ideally follows the adventures of the previous film with the same cast, Kirk and his team find themselves facing a terrible unknown threat, which we will discover to be - in reality - linked to a tragic and unimaginable future ...

A present threat and a warning from the future, in one of the most successful and complex references to those time travels that have characterized many episodes of the TV series and have long fascinated fans.

Benedict Cumberbatch, the Sherlock of TV, plays the role of the legendary Khan and contributes to the rhythm and mystery of a film that keeps viewers glued to their seats all over the world.

Action, irony, special effects and a perfect cast: the protagonists all return, after the previous film, and in addition to Cumberbatch there are prestigious guest stars such as Peter Weller, Jennifer Morrison and of course the most appreciated of all: Leonardy Nimoy.

For Nimoy, unfortunately, it will be the last interpretation: the beloved actor would have died less than two years after the release of Into Darkness, on February 27, 2015, at the age of 83.

Another great name linked to science fiction and the collective imagination is also honored by this film: in 2012, the year before the release of Into Darkness, the great writer Ray Bradbury had passed away. To pay homage to him, a Starfleet starship is mentioned in the film: the USS Bradbury.

Into Darkness also conquers a prestigious record: the film of the saga with the highest box office grosses in the world in the history of the franchise.

Star Trek Beyond (2016)

For the thirteenth and final (so far, but a sequel has already been confirmed) film in the franchise, J.J. Abrams he just produces and passes the baton to directing a Justin Lin (known for several chapters of Fast & Furious).

The screenplay is signed by the actor Simon Pegg - also interpreter of Scotty - along with Doug Jung (Dark Blue).

JJ Abrams reduces his role because with this film he leaves Star Trek to devote himself to the other great sci-fi franchise, that of Star Wars. The lack of him is felt: the takings do not even touch the record of Into Darkness but still represent a success (343 million against 185 spent for the realization).

The plot of the film, also distributed under the title of Star Trek: Beyond (with the colon absent elsewhere) revolves around the destruction of the Enterprise by an unknown alien race.

The crew of the starship is saved because they have landed on a planet, but they do not know how to get home and find themselves fighting against an unprecedented enemy. He will be saved thanks to a rebel alien, who will help him avert the start of a galactic war.

The well-established cast gives us the latest interpretation of the young and talented actor Anton Yelchin died at 27 in a tragic domestic accident (he was crushed by his car parked on the garage ramp) a few days before the film was released in theaters. In the credits of the film there is a dedication for him.

Among the guest stars of this chapter the actor Idris Elba, the screenwriter Doug Jung in the role of Ben e Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon.

In the script there is also a tribute to the first script of the classic series, in which the main spaceship was christened by Gene Roddenberry "Yorktown", later replaced by Enterprise. Simon Pegg makes a reference to the Yorktown space station during a conversation.

Seasons air at the same time, you can alternate episodes by watching one per series or seasons, watching first a season of TNG and then a season of DS9, or finish TNG and then attack DS9. It is up to you, the important thing is to remember that they aired in the US at the same time starting from the episode The Ship in a Bottle of TNG (6x12) which you can use as the beginning of the alternation with the first season of DS9.
  • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (season 3) and Star Trek: Voyager (season 1). These also aired simultaneously in the US, starting with the episode Past Times (3x11) of DS9), in January 1995.

  • Star Trek: Picard
  • Star Trek: Discovery (seasons 3 and 4)
  • 2 option: Star Trek (2009) at this point: according to many, the correct positioning of the last three films is between Discovery and The Classic Series. Chronologically speaking it would be correct, but there is one factor that I believe is fundamental for positioning at the bottom of the viewing list: the events of the new films develop along an alternative timeline to that narrated in The Nemesis. So you could complete the vision with the three new films, which are close and successive to each other, and which build a narrative that takes an alternative - and not chronological - direction to the facts narrated by La Nemesis. Personally, I prefer option 1, which more closely follows the chronology of the facts.
