Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is scheduled in Italian cinemas from 2021 September 4. Its theatrical release can be considered as the real cinematic debut of Phase XNUMX of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Black Widow instead, even if it introduces new characters and winks to the future with his scene after the credits, is a prequel film (set after the events narrated in Captain America: Civil War).

The Marvel Studios film directed by Destin Daniel Cretton has introduced the public to new heroes and villains of the MCU but there are still several references to previous Marvel projects (and not only) that are worth discovering: here then easter egg and trivia from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Warning: the following article contains spoilers about the movie!

The bamboo scaffold

In Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings there is a beautiful fight that takes place on a rather peculiar scaffolding for the "western eye". This scaffolding is entirely built with bamboo plants:

Well, in Hong Kong, workers still use this system to build scaffolding, useful for construction work. Bamboo is a very resistant plant that offers several advantages in this type of application: it is a sustainable material since bamboo grows out of all proportion and in a short time, these scaffolding can be dismantled much faster than metal ones and as a material - if built. with the right rules - it turns out stronger than steel itself.

The link to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

In order to find his sister, Shang-Chi travels to Macau. Here it is revealed that his sister Xialing runs what can be called a "clandestine gambling den" of fighting.
Well, in one of the scenes shot inside the Macau facility you can see - behind Shang-Chi - a drawing that is very reminiscent of the Madripoor flag:

The flag can be seen on your left

Madripoor is a city-state of the MCU located in the archipelago of Southeast Asia. In the TV series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Madripoor is where Power Broker aka Sharon Carter operates.
If that design really represents the flag of Madripoor, one could think of a possible alliance between Macau and the city of Power Broker. We could therefore also explain the mysterious phone call made by Sharon Carter at the end of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: what if Sharon had called Xialing for a renewed alliance?

A touch of Italian style

As is clear from the beginning of the film, Shang-Chi begins his adventure in San Francisco.

The opening scene of the film sees Shang-Chi engaging in a breathtaking fight inside a bus. This runs unrestrained through the streets of San Francisco until it passes in front of the Ghirardelli Square. This is a large shopping center where you can go shopping and, above all, eat a good chocolate. The latter is considered the specialty of Ghirardelli Square and (guess what) has Italian origins. These date back to Domenico Ghirardelli born in Rapallo in 1817 and became a pastry chef in Genoa.

The history of Ghirardelli Square it is intertwined with that of the inhabitants of San Francisco. After years of success, the chocolate factory - run by Ghirardelli himself and his friend James Lick in the mid-1800s - opened several factories around the world and moved out of the American city. To prevent the historic building from being demolished, a group of San Francisco residents bought it in the early 60s. Thanks to them, even today, it is possible to visit the large square that bears the name of an Italian.

The YouTuber of the bus

Shang-Chi's fight on the San Francisco bus is filmed in live streaming by a bearded guy:

Well this same actor, this Zach Cherry, appeared in another Marvel movie or in Spider-Man: Homecoming. In the Spider-Man movie, Cherry plays a hot dog peddler interacting with Spider-Man.

It hasn't been officially confirmed if it's the same character: one is in New York City and the other in San Francisco. In theory this character - a street vendor in NYC - could be on vacation in San Francisco.

Michelle Yeoh: the dual role in the MCU

The actress class of '62 Michelle Yeoh is the protagonist in the film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in the role of Ying Nan or the aunt of the hero.
In the MCU, however, it is not the first time that you see it! In fact Yeoh took on the role of Aleta Ogord in one of the credits scenes of the movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2:

The fact that Michelle Yeoh plays Shang-Chi's aunt might suggest that there will be no future or MCU for Aleta Ogord.

The cameo of the Black Widow and the Extremis soldier

In the new Marvel movie, one of the Black Widows of the Red Room that audiences saw in the recent film makes an appearance #Black Widow. This is one of the Macau fighters.

The scene was also featured in an official Shang-Chi clip (from the 35th second of the video):

The actress who plays this Black Widow is Jade Xu. Her involvement in the film was anticipated with a Marvel Studios tweet on July 20, 2021 (re-posted by the actress on Instagram):

Together with her she fights a man who seems to have the same "light" under his skin as the Extremis soldiers seen in Iron Man 3. This can be considered a tribute to the film that introduced the Mandarin as a character. But it can also be read as the fact that the Extremis experiment it's still alive and maybe it works. In fact, it seems difficult for Xialing to fight a potential bomb inside his "fightclub".

The fantastic beasts of Ta Lo

In the film Ta Lo is described as a realm where an army lives to protect the universe from the threats of the dark dimension.

In addition to its inhabitants, Ta Lo is also home to special creatures, which at first glance may surprise Western audiences but which should be familiar to Eastern viewers. The creatures of the film that dwell in Ta Lo are in fact inspired by the Chinese mythology: nine-tailed foxes, dragon-faced horses, giant lions etc. etc ..

The figure of Morris, for example, it is inspired by the creature called DiJiang. In Chinese mythology this is a faceless bird with six legs and four wings:

Fake Mandarin Trevor Slattery is ready to return, here's where

The actor Ben Kingsley will return as Trevor Slattery. Trevor is the character we have seen in Iron Man 3, professional actor, hired to play the part of a terrorist known by the name of Mandarin. Slattery is back as a co-star in the film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. As reported by Variety, Ben Kinglsey as Trevor Slattery is expected to join the cast of Wonder Man, a new TV series Disney + exclusive which is currently in the works in secret.
Marvel Studios has not released any statements on possible projects not yet announced. There is no statement on the matter by Ben Kingsley or a representative of him.

Who is Trevor Slattery

Trevor Slattery's story in the Marvel Studios movies is a bit complicated. In 2013 in Iron Man 3 he is presented as the leader of a terrorist organization responsible for deadly attacks. But Tony Stark / Iron Man, investigating, discovers that Slattery is an actor from a career in decline, who plays the part which was entrusted to him by the true villain of the film: Aldrich Killian, the evil scientist who plots revenge against Tony.
Kingsley reprized this same role in 2021 in the film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. In this film we discover that Slattery was captured and imprisoned by Shang-Chi's father, Wenwu. The latter is the leader of the criminal organization called the Ten Rings and forces Slattery to perform as a court jester. Fortunately, thanks to Shang-Chi's intervention, along with his sister and best friend, Xialing and Katy respectively, the unfortunate Slattery manages to escape from the criminal organization.
After escaping Trevor takes part in the adventures of Shang-Chi and arrives in Ta Lo, a magical village located in another dimension. At the end of the Shang-Chi film, Trevor Slattery remains to live in Ta Lo.

If a series about the superhero Wonder Man were actually in the works, it could enter the official Marvel / Disney announcement list at Disney+Day, on September 8, 2022.
