The Disney Plus Day of November 12, 2021 were many news announced coming to the Mickey Mouse platform and among them is the highly anticipated Star Wars TV series #Kenobi.

The Lucasfilm-produced show has received special treatment as Disney has decided to offer only its subscribers a special 1-minute, 16-second video to watch on the streaming platform. The sneak peek presents the director's statements Deborah Chow and the leading actor Ewan McGregor. Chow talks about the series' scenario, which will be the Empire's highest expansion, so a very dark time when he's not sure he's a Jedi. McGregor says he's very happy to be back working with Hayden Christensen (who plays Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader) and that Obi-Wan Kenobi's aim is to keep little Luke Skywalker safe on Tatooine.

In addition to this, no filmed scenes from the series were shown but only some interesting ones concept art. One of them concerns a hypothetical duel between Kenobi and Darth Vader which appears to have taken place after the end of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and before the start of Star Wars: A New Hope. A clash between the Jedi and the Sith in this period of time, however, has never been contemplated by fans since, in theory, the two characters have not seen each other again after the duel on Mustafar and before the one inside the Death Star. What could have happened? When could the two have met? Before moving on to three theories that could solve the mystery, you need to remember what happened in Episode III and Episode IV.

The encounters of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith

In Episode III Anakin Skywalker is convinced by Chancellor Palpatine aka Darth Sidious to go to the dark side of the Force. When Sidious issues Order 66 to kill all the Jedi and overthrow the Republic, Anakin is tasked with traveling to the lava planet of Mustafar to kill the separatist leaders. Here, after carrying out a massacre, Anakin is joined by Obi-Wan Kenobi and his wife Padme. In an act of anger Anakin suffocates her loved one until she faints, while the master Kenobi tries to convince him to retrace her steps, to find her reason again. But now the duel is inevitable: Kenobi and Anakin face off among the fiery rocky boulders of Mustafar. The character played by Ewan McGregor wins and Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) is left to burn on the bank of a lava river. The latter is rescued by Palpatine and will be transformed into Darth Vader.

Star Wars: A New Hope

After Episode III you go straight to Episode IV to see Obi-Wan Kenobi on the screen again. This is now a hermit from the planet Tatooine when he is contacted by young Luke Skywalker about a message contained in a droid (R2-D2). The adventure will bring the two, Luke and Obi-Wan, to the Death Star and in particular will put Kenobi back in front of his former student Darth Vader. When the two meet the Sith says:

Obi-Wan was waiting for you. We finally meet again. Now the circle is complete. When I left you I was but a disciple, now I am the teacher.

In a second moment of the duel Darth Vader still says a sentence to his old master:

You shouldn't have come back.

Theory 1: The duel in Kenobi has occurred

Assuming that George Lucas almost certainly thought that the duel between Obi-Wan and Anakin preceding this one in the TV series was the one over Mustafar, it must also be admitted that to increase the anticipation of the Lucasfilm TV product he must find a way to to bring together two of the most important characters of the saga in the new series. So to justify the possible "new" duel between Kenobi and Vader, anticipated by the concept art, it is necessary to look for a "quirk" in the words spoken by the Sith about the Black Death.

The "misunderstanding" could be referring to the phrase "When I left you I was but a disciple, now I am the teacher." This could mean that in the hypothetical confrontation that will be seen in the TV series Anakin could still consider himself a disciple of Darth Sidious. In addition, considering the presence of fire and lava, the clash seems to take place on Mustafar: could Obi-Wan have returned to Mustafar to kill Vader once and for all?
Considering the cinematic developments of Episode IV, if the two ever collide in the Kenobi series, neither can be defeated.

Theory 2: The duel in Kenobi is Anakin's vision

There are many ways to show something that isn't actually happening. One of these can be a dream or a vision. During the animated series #The Clone Wars (but also in the prequel trilogy) Anakin was repeatedly disturbed by disturbing (often premonitory) dreams.

The one from the Kenobi TV series could be one vision of Anakin of the future duel on the Death Star. Or the Sith could remember the duel with Kenobi imagining himself as the Sith he has become. Or alternatively Anakin dreams, like a desire, to meet his old teacher again.

Theory 3: Kenobi is not involved in the duel

My favorite theory is that the Jedi involved in the concept art duel is not Obi-Wan but another Jedi: in fact the image does not show the face of the Jedi with the blue lightsaber.
Fans could witness a spectacular duel between Darth Vader and one of the surviving Jedi of Order 66, who reached the Sith on Mustafar to try to kill him. Or the duel could take place inside a city that Vader himself razed and set on fire in order to find one of the hidden Jedi.
