Directed by Robert Towne, Without Limits tells the private and professional life of Steve Prefontaine (Billy Crudup), the American middle-distance runner who participated in the 1972 Munich Olympics.

An integral part of the film is the athlete's relationship with coach Bill Bowerman (played by Donald Sutherland). Thus we witness Prefontaine's formative years in Oregon, which enabled him to compete in the 1972 Summer Olympics before tragically losing his life in a car accident at the age of 24.
