The debut of the Loki series brought new concepts and new characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Among these there are the Time Keepers (called in Italian the Keepers of Time), which should represent an important slice for the construction of the series and for the future of the MCU.

During the Marvel Studios show it is narrated that, after a war between the timelines, the Keepers of Time brought order to the MultiVerso, rearranging it under a single timeline called Sacred Timeline. They later established the Time Variance Authority (TVA). This agency has the task of checking that the Sacred Timeline does not undergo any variations whatsoever, and that therefore no living being deviates from the predetermined path in time.

On the Disney + show, Loki is intent on meeting the Time Keepers, so it seems very likely that more will be heard of during the first season.

The Keepers in Time in Marvel Comics

The Keepers of Time were invented by Mark Gruenwald and Ralph Macchio and first appeared in 1979 in Thor issue 282.

The comic story by Time Keeper is very different from that proposed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The main difference is that TVA existed well before the advent of the Time Keepers. The latter were in fact created by the last director of the Time Variance Authority (whose name is still unknown), after his first experiment - the Time Twister - failed miserably in the task of protecting the correct flow of time.

Marvel Comics publications have been going on for decades now. When it comes to the topic of MultiVerse and timelines there are so many factors that have influenced the stories, and so many characters who have taken part in it. To simplify the order of the facts related to the birth of the Keepers of Time, here are the three fundamental points:

  • The Time Variance Authority was formed under still unknown circumstances in the distant future of the Marvel universe
  • When the universe is collapsing, in the historical period called "the end times", the last director of the TVA creates the powerful Time Twisters. These are three beings designed to monitor and - if necessary - manipulate the flow of time. But something goes wrong and the Time Twisters abuse their power and become real villains
  • With the help of Thor the last director of TVA (called The One Who Remains) manages to defeat the Time Twisters and decides to create the Time Keepers

The greatest power of the Time Keepers is that of being able manipulate temporal energy. They can age or rejuvenate any being (unless this is an immortal God). They can travel freely through time and can call back beings from other timelines to them. Finally, if they so wished, they could wipe out an entire civilization from history.

The connection with Kang the Conqueror

It is already known that one of the villains of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be Kang the Conqueror. Kang will certainly appear in the third film dedicated to the character played by Paul Rudd or # Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.

Kang is a time traveler who does not respect its laws. For this reason he has always been in the sights of the Time Keepers and the TVA.

The "hook" that connects Kang to the Loki TV series is represented by Judge Ravonna Renslayer, who in the comics was a lover of Kang.

The story goes that Ravonna was a princess from a kingdom that Kang intended to conquer. After this happened, Kang was supposed to kill the princess, but he fell in love with her. The love was later reciprocated and the two lived together until Ravonna sacrificed herself to save Kang from certain death. Ravonna did not die, but she fell into a deep coma that Kang was unable to subvert.

The story changed when Kang, in search of a cure for his beloved, went to the Great teacher (already appeared in the MCU in Thor: Ragnarok). The latter proposed a pact to save Ravonna and to kill the Avengers, or Kang's bitter enemies. Some external factors, however, influenced the pact, forcing Kang to choose only one of his two objectives and, albeit with regret, Kang decided to hunt down the Avengers.

Without saying anything to Kang, the Grand Master awoke Ravonna himself who, aware of the choice of his former love, turned against Kang vowing to take revenge.

To connect Kang even more closely to the Keepers of Time, you need to name the character of immortus. The latter is nothing more than a variant of Kang the Conqueror. More precisely, Immortus is the future version of Kang born from the will of the Time Keepers to make Kang one of their agents.

In the long history of Immortus (the character dates back to the 60s), the villain found himself an ally and enemy of the Keepers of Time and had to do with the Avengers, with Wanda Maximoff and above all with the Time Twister, who have manipulated to their liking.

In the plans of Marvel Studios in Loki could be introduced Immortus and then, in Ant-Man 3, Kang.

To date, June 10, 2021, Disney + has made available to its users only the first episode of Loki. So it's still early to know if Ravonna's live-action character has any real connections to Kang the Conqueror, and if Marvel Studios will include Immortus as the protagonist. It's safe to expect some references and possibly a post-credit scene in one of the next episodes of the show with Tom Hiddleston.
