Cars 3 plot

The third Cars film, a sequel to Cars - Roaring Engines and Cars 2, is set six years after the events shown in the second film. Lightning McQueen has now become an industry legend by winning several titles and races, but during this very successful period, he appears Jackson Storm. A young phenomenon of the moment, who begins to cross one finish line after another by turning off the spotlight on McQueen and inevitably attracting them to himself. But Storm is not the only novelty of the kind of him, because many old vehicles are starting to be replaced by new racing cars like him. Lightning does not want to resign himself and in an attempt to make a new race, he suffers an accident for which in the end he is temporarily forced to retire.

After months of rest he tries to train to get back on track, but things do not go as he hoped and there are those who try to convince him that now it is time to retire. At that point McQueen decides to contact the only person who can really help him, that is Smokey; an old 1946 pickup that had been the teacher of his mentor Doc Hudson. Smokey agrees to help Saetta regain his shape, but above all he makes him understand that in a race, not only the appearance and age count but above all the experience and the ability; two fundamental skills that are not only used to compete, but also to teach others how to do it. Cars 3 is produced by Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

Cars: Cars on the Road

Cars on the Road plot

As with the Cars films, the plot of this series once again stars Lightning McQueen together with his now inseparable friend Mater, who face a long journey to visit Mater's sister who is about to get married. During the journey, the monster truck Ivy will join them and in the various episodes other well-known characters of the franchise will also peep out.

The story was inspired by the childhood of Steve Purcell, who remembered a journey made as a child with his family: every place crossed for him was like a new adventure to live in unknown scenarios and he chose to bring this theme also in Cars on the Road through the journeys of Lightning and Mater. For this reason, each episode shows different contexts, some of which are inspired by other shows known as Mad Max e Shining: also the theme song will have a slightly different music in the various episodes, to diversify the various stories and places explored.

The order in which to watch the Cars movies

Disney-Pixar
Cars - All the films in the saga

Movies and all other Cars content can be watched in order of release or in chronological order. In the first case, simply view them in order of output as follows:

Exit order

  • Cars - Roaring Engines (2006)
  • Carl Tools and the Phantom Light (2006)
  • Cars Toon (2008)
  • Cars 2 (2011)
  • Planes (2013)
  • Planes 2 - Fire Fighting Mission (2014)
  • Cars 3 (2017)
  • Cars on the Road (2022)

In the second case, however, you can watch the various contents based on what is shown in the plot. In this case you are watching the first three Cars movies where all the characters and the complete main story are shown. Then you can see the shorts and series, all of which are insights into some of the main characters known in the three Cars films.

Finally, the two Planes films are watched because the characters of this spin-off are presented in an episode of the Cars Toon series entitled Ratchet pilot with a patent, and therefore they know each other in this context for the first time. On the other hand, despite being a spin-off, Planes deals with stories and characters distinct from those of Cars and therefore the two films can be easily watched last; or at most directly after the Cart Toon episode in which they first appear.
